Actor Eric Dane, best known for roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, has opened up for the first time on television about living with ALS. Speaking with Diane Sawyer in a segment for Good Morning America, the 52-year-old actor gave an honest and emotional look at his journey since the diagnosis.
In a preview of the interview aired on June 12, Dane is seen holding Sawyer’s hand and sharing how real the condition feels every day. “I wake up every day and I’m immediately reminded that this is happening. It’s not a dream,” he says through tears, capturing the difficult reality of ALS.
Despite the diagnosis, Dane remains strong and hopeful. “I don’t think this is the end of my story. I don’t feel like this is the end of me,” he said, showing courage and resilience in the face of his condition.
Dane had first revealed his diagnosis in April, during an exclusive interview with People magazine. “I have been diagnosed with ALS,” he said at the time. “I am thankful to have my wonderful family with me as we go through this next stage.”
He is married to actress Rebecca Gayheart, and they have two daughters — Billie Beatrice, 15, and Georgia Geraldine, 13. Dane has asked the public to respect his family’s privacy during this challenging time.
What Is ALS?
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a rare condition that attacks the nervous system, gradually leading to muscle weakness and paralysis. Symptoms often begin with small changes, like muscle twitches or trouble speaking. Over time, patients may lose the ability to walk, talk, or even breathe.
There is currently no cure for ALS. Life expectancy after diagnosis is usually three to five years, although some people live much longer.
